FREEDOM TRAIN departs from historic Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church Thursday, February 19th when the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS begins the Spring 2015 session!
Kids ages 7-11 are invited to board the “Freedom Train” on Thursday,
February 19th from 3:30 p.m. -5:30 p.m. when the ever popular,
unparalleled ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS gathers together at the historic Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church for the Spring 2015 session. The chorus will perform a brand new program of songs
from around the world. Led by accomplished teaching artists, the
spotlight will be on music with a message of freedom that invokes the joy of
The 13-week open rehearsals (no audition required) begins Thursday, February 19th and runs through May 14th, with a final “Freedom Train Gala Fundraiser Concert” on Sunday, May 17th 6-8 pm.
The fee for the 13-week program & concert is $300, and includes healthy snacks, drinks, pizza and occasional sweets courtesy of Erica’s Rugelach & Baking, Co, a music notebook, art supplies for a freedom-themed community mural, surprise guest artists and more! Centrally located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, just a stone’s throw from Brooklyn Academy of Music, the LAPC is easily accessible by the A, C and G subways.
Says, ANNA WINTHROP, the newest teaching and performing artist to join the OWBKC, “The timeless concept of freedom can lift the human spirit to action, deep thought and awareness. I’m very exciting about this engaging line up of incredible repertoire & surprise guest artists.” Anna, a faculty member of New York University, has performed in many operatic & theatrical lead roles, including television appearances on “Saturday Night Live” and “Guiding Light.” An accomplished singer, pianist, actress & dancer who is comfortable in jazz, classical & contemporary genres, Anna has received an award for outstanding vocal achievement by the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts.
In addition to Anna’s expert instruction, the following teaching artists will help the kids improve vocal technique & musicianship through engaging repertoire and exercises. We welcome back LISA GUTKIN, acclaimed fiddler, singer-songwriter, composer-in-residence of the OWBKC and Grammy winning member of renowned band THE KLEZMATICS; internationally recognized classical guitarist, ROBERT SECRIST; beloved singer-songwriter, JEAN ROHE; dazzling world music vocalist, SHELLEY THOMAS; singer, swing & rhythm tap dancer, CAROLYNN MURPHY, as well as other surprise vocal & instrumental guest artists to be announced.
Former guest artists have featured jazz & blues piano/vocal legend, HENRY BUTLER; celebrated jazz vocalist, CARLA COOK; beloved director of the LAPC’s “Inspirational Ensemble & jazz singer, JANIS RUSSELL; accomplished singer, multi-instrumentalist, Yiddish scholar & member of the Grammy winning band The Klezmatics, LORIN SKLAMBERG.
