Sangria is the perfect accompaniment to any meal because you can make it sweet, tangy, or a mix of both. It’s one of those drinks that is easy to make but hard to master. Below, the talented bartenders at Barlovento in Manhattan, NY, share a few tips for making mouthwatering sangria at home:
How to Make the Perfect Sangria
1. Start With the Right Wine
Sangria calls for a wine that is inexpensive but not necessarily cheap. If you are hosting a party, buying fairly decent bottles at a wholesale club like BJ’s or Costco is the way to go. In NYC check out the Trader Joe’s in Union Square on 14th Street or even Whole Foods now that Amazon took over there prices are much less than previously even Fairaway market has a good selection and of coarse check your local NYC wine or liquor store for some great bargains. Don’t be scared to experiment and mix it up! Have fun with it.
Because this cocktail contains several ingredients, any special flavor notes in expensive wine will be lost; however, you should still pay attention to the underlying flavors because they will come into play when choosing a corresponding liquor to add.
2. Get Creative With the Mixer
Brandy is the classic mixer for sangria, but there are dozens of other delectable options that you can choose from. For example, if you purchased a bottle of wine that has notes of citrus, you could try mixing it with Grand Marnier® or lemon-flavored vodka. Look for a liquor that will bring out the flavors of the wine while complementing the fresh fruit you plan on adding.
3. Top It Off With Something Bubbly
Sangria is best enjoyed as a light, refreshing cocktail, so finish it off with some bubbles. Ginger ale, lemon soda, raspberry seltzer, and champagne are a few of the options worth considering. Add some fresh fruit on top, and you’re sure to have a crowd-pleasing drink.
