It is the job of a concrete contractor to know the difference between concrete and cement—and know the properties that will create the desired material for any job. Although many people use these two terms interchangeably, they are related, but not the same. Below, you’ll find a brief guide explaining these concepts.

What’s the Difference?

Cement is mainly composed of limestone, aluminum, calcium, and clay. However, the color and consistency can vary greatly, depending on the mixture’s coloring agents and drying times. Cement is one of the materials that is used to make all concrete. Concrete combines water and an aggregate of sand or rock with the cement to create a mixture that will be incredibly strong and durable once hardened.

Why Does It Matter?

So why is it important to know the difference between concrete and cement? Concrete contractors design concrete based on the specific project and desired qualities, and they use different types of cement depending on the job. There are two types of cement contractors use: hydraulic and non-hydraulic.  Hydraulic cement is water resistant, making it an option for concrete that is used in waterproofing jobs aimed at repairing leaks. It also sets and hardens very fast after it has been mixed with water.

When mixing concrete, contractors will use various proportions to make a material with the desired features.  Generally, concrete contains about 10-15% cement, with the larger portion being the aggregate and water mixture. The best concrete mixes contain only clean and chemical-free materials as this will produce the best results.
