An apple a day keeps the Doctor away. This is so true! Biting and chewing an apple has dental as well as general health benefits.

While eating an apple isn’t the same as brushing your teeth with a toothpaste that contains fluoride, it can tide you over until you have a chance to brush. Eating one of these delicious fruits acts a bit like a toothbrush, scraping food particles and bacteria away from your teeth, gums and tongue. The action of eating an apple produces saliva in your mouth, which rinses your mouth while helping prevent build up on the teeth.  Try packing a whole apple or apple slices with you to give your teeth a good scrubbing at the end of each meal.

Apple are a rich source of fiber, potassium, anti-oxidants and water. The skin on an apple is especially high in fiber and the texture of it can help remove minor staining. The fiber found in an apple can even help reduce cholesterol and prevent heart diseases. The fiber found in apples will ferment in the colon which helps fight cancer cells from forming in the colon. The potassium contained in apples helps control sodium levels in the blood. Eating an apple a day helps reduce blood pressure and prevent stroke. The anti-oxidants in this treat slow down the overall oxidation process which helps slow aging of the skin.

Lastly, apples are great for getting rid of bad breath. The natural fibers help remove traces of plaque and residue that can harbor in the back of your tongue and throat that create bad breath.  The acidity of an apple helps kill any bacteria that may cause bad breath as well.

Do you need more reasons to include apples in your diet? We didn’t think so!
