3 DOT Physical Facts You Didn't Know, Pecos, Texas

If you're a commercial driver operating in Texas, you'll need to pass a physical exam to prove to the Department of Transportation that you're safe on the road. DOT physicals qualify you to operate a commercial vehicle for up to two years at a time before you need another exam. Before you go in for your exam, there are a few things you should know about the DOT's requirements.

What You Need to Know About DOT Physicals

1. The Drug Testing Is Strict

Yes, you will have to give a urine sample, and yes, any drug use is going to show up. Commercial drivers cannot be found to be using any Schedule 1 or habit-forming drug, nor can you use amphetamines or narcotics of any kind. Your test may come back positive even a month after drug use.

2. Other Health Conditions Affect Your Eligibility

DOT PhysicalWhile the drug test is a component of your exam, it's not all your health care provider is looking for. The DOT physical also check whether you meet requirements for eyesight, hearing, and general health. Blood pressure over 160/100 must be managed with medication, and diabetes must also be under strict control without insulin shots. In some cases, you may have to take a stress test.

3. You Can Get a Temporary Card

In certain cases, you may be issued a temporary, provisional card while you work on managing certain health conditions. This card will give you a little time to look into health problems and arrange medications, but after this grace period, you'll have to meet the DOT requirements to keep driving commercially.
