Wearing contact lenses can give you the confidence, convenience, and clear vision you’re looking for. While their benefits make them a popular alternative to glasses, it is important to learn how to care for them properly to protect your eyesight from disease and damage and keep your lenses in good condition. Hawaii Vision Clinic prescribes these reliable and flexible alternatives to frames to many of their patients. In the list below, they offer their top tips for caring for your contacts.

Tips for Wearing Contact Lenses

Wash Your Hands

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling your contacts. This includes putting them in, removing them, or placing them in a storage container. Use soap and warm water to form a rich lather and wash away excess suds and dirt. Avoid applying lotion to your skin, which can transfer to your lenses.

Use Clean Equipment

Be as hygienic with your contacts and storage containers as you are with your hands. Use the solution your ophthalmologist recommends and do not mix types. You should also avoid placing your contacts in a travel container, which is not as sanitary as the original. Rinse your lenses thoroughly to ensure cleanliness.

Place Lenses Properly

Honolulu-Contact-LensesPlace the lens on the tip of your index or middle finger so it forms the shape of a cup. Using your fingers and thumb on your other hand to hold your eyelids open, place the lens in your eye as you look up or forward. Next, close your eye, roll it, and blink. If placed properly, your contact should feel comfortable in your eye and your vision will be clear.

Remove Lenses Safely

Take them out by looking upward or sideways and gently pull down your lower eyelid with your finger. Move the lens over to the white of your eye, then pinch it off with your index finger or thumb. Take care with long fingernails to avoid scratching your eye.

Avoid UV Light

Ultraviolet light is damaging to your eyes. Ask your doctor about contact lenses with UV protection, which keep harmful rays from entering your field of vision. You can also wear sunglasses with UV protection.

Replace Makeup Frequently

If you wear eyeshadow, liner, or mascara, replace your makeup every few months. Some patients change shades with the season, ensuring they protect their lenses and eyesight from bacteria and dirt. If you are sick or have an eye infection, you may want to replace your makeup sooner.

Prevent Eye Injuries

Take active steps to avoid an eye injury while wearing contacts. Be careful when playing sports and working in hazardous conditions. Consider wearing protective eyewear if your vision is at risk.
