4 Tips for Riding a Motorcycle Safely in the Rain, Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Though many bikers may not been keen on riding in the rain, sometimes you have to get somewhere. It’s a good rule of thumb that anything more dangerous to do in a car, like driving in the rain, is no different on a motorcycle. If you must get on the road, it’s important to take a few precautions to avoid a motorcycle accident.

Dress Properly (and Wear a Helmet)

FirstMotorcycle Accident things first: it doesn’t matter if it’s raining, sleeting, or sunny. Always wear a helmet. If you do end up in a motorcycle accident, helmets greatly minimize risk of injury. Motorcyclists are exposed to the elements, so when it’s raining, you’re going to need special clothing. Getting wet isn’t just uncomfortable and risky from a health standpoint — it can distract you from the road and impede your mobility.

Increase Stopping Distance

Wet roads are slippery, especially on busy roads. If you see a sleek rainbow on the road, it’s because there’s an oil slick floating on top of the water: avoid those where possible, but if you can’t, make sure to give yourself even more stopping distance. Enough water on the road can also result in hydroplaning, which is when the water stops your tire from getting traction on the pavement. If this occurs, ease off the accelerator and try to resist slamming your brakes. Brake very slowly, if at all.

Drive Slower — Especially Around Turns

This follows with increasing your stopping distance — water decreases your tire traction, so it won’t be as easy to slow down. You might also experience worse handling, which is why you should go very slowly around turns. This decreased traction can make it harder to stay balanced, and unexpected hydroplaning will severely punish reckless turning.

Keep Your Tires Inflated

Before a long drive in the rain, it’s a good idea to get your tires re-pumped. Anything you can do to increase tire traction will help you keep up your handling. This includes staying vigilant against doing anything bad for your tires, like parking too close to a curb or running over debris.

While riding a motorcycle in the rain is far from impossible, you can never let down your guard against motorcycle accidents. Make sure you’re equipped to head out into the rain and practice good judgement.
