There are easily millions of different ways that coffee drinkers like to garnish their morning cup. Whether you prefer sugar, almond milk, skim milk, organic creamer, or plain old fashioned milk or cream, the sky is the limit when it comes to dressing up and personalizing your coffee. But lately, everyone is abuzz with the new coffee trend: The Bulletproof Method.
Originally invented by entrepreneur Dave Asprey, this method is designed to protect you against belly fat, fatigue, chronic diseases, generally flabbiness, and arthritis (which is near and dear to Asprey, who was diagnosed with the disease as a teenager). This concoction is made up of high quality filter coffee, two tablespoons of high quality coconut oil, and then – the kicker – two spoons of unsalted butter. The belief is that this method teaches the body to burn up fat instead of sugar, which is proven to not only improve physical appearance, but also positively impact the brain as well.
Since the advent of Bulletproof coffee, kitchen creatives have come up with their own modifications, using things like cinnamon, vanilla, stevia, ghee, and more. For those of you who aren’t brave enough to throw some butter in your java, you can add just the coconut oil and still reap the benefits. One of the main ingredients in coconut oil is medium-chain triglycerides (MGT) which yield similar results to using butter.
Over at Garden of Eden, we figured we might as well try this out for ourselves. In the process of creating our own coconut oil and coffee mixture, we realized that blending is a key part of its success.
We came up with two methods that we found to be the most delicious and effective.
For both methods you’ll need:
§1 c. Organic Coffee (Fair Trade is preferred. Learn more about Fair Trade Coffee)
§1 tbsp. Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil
Place your ingredients in a small blender. Blend for about 5-8 seconds. Serve and enjoy!
