During the summer months, central air conditioning can make up half or more of your utility expenses. It’s important to learn how air conditioner efficiency is calculated so you can purchase an AC unit accordingly. Air conditioners are rated by their seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) or the level of energy that is used. The number is calculated by determining the British Thermal Units (BTU) of heat that the cooling system removes per hour. Below is a brief guide to further explain these concepts so you’ll know how to apply them to everyday life.

A Guide to Measuring Air Conditioner Efficiency

What Is AC Efficiency?Air Conditioner

Central air conditioners operate by circulating air through a system of ducts connected throughout your home. This air recirculates back through the ducts continuously. A new energy efficient central AC unit can expend 20 to 40% less energy to cool a home than models that are 10 years or older.

When buying a central AC system, it’s important to choose an energy efficient model that carries the ENERGY STAR® label. Its efficiency is 15% more functional than standard units. If properly sized for your home and installed correctly, the system can last for at least 10 to 15 years.

How Is AC Efficiency Measured?

SEER ratings measure the cooling power of a central AC system. The ratio of cooling output is measured in BTUs and divided by the Watt hours of energy consumed. The unit’s average energy output is assessed during an average cooling season. The SEER value is available on the Energy Guide tag that is attached to the unit when it’s purchased. The SEER value can range from eight to 30, and the higher the value, the more efficient the AC system will be. Your HVAC contractor can help you determine which SEER rating is the best option based on the size of your home or business.
