Whether you want to enhance the landscaping around the exterior of your home or are looking to start a unique project, it can be difficult to select an aggregate. While they are often thought of as interchangeable, crushed stone and pea gravel are quite different in both appearance and application. Below is an explanation of their differences.

How Do Crushed Stone & Pea Gravel Differ?

Size & Shape

The biggest difference between crushed stone and pea gravel is size. While pea gravel comes in a variety of sizes, it’s typically a lot smaller than crushed stone, with the diameter of each piece comprising less than half an inch. The shape of pea gravel is also different than that of crushed stone. Pea gravel, as its name suggests, is rounder in shape, which makes it smoother and softer to the touch. The circular shape highlights both bright and neutral colors when used as a paver.

On the other hand, crushed stone is larger, with an individual piece ranging anywhere from a ¼ inch to four inches wide. Since this material is quite literally made from stone that’s been crushed, the shape is much more irregular than pea gravel, with sharper edges and a rougher texture.

Usage

crushed stoneCrushed stone is most frequently used for underground projects. Contractors lay this material underneath concrete to create a solid, durable base. Although it’s a sturdy choice, crushed stone’s rugged shape prevents it from being used in highly trafficked areas.

The beautiful color and soft shape of pea gravel make it ideal for above-ground projects like landscaping, walkways, and playgrounds. However, it’s important to establish concrete pavers around this material to keep it in place.
