When the death of a loved one occurs, there are many difficult decisions that need to be made. Whether you’re in the midst of discussing what the deceased’s wishes are or you’re making the decisions for them, it’s important to know what options you have available when it comes to burial or cremation. An increasingly popular choice, cremation has more choices available than you may know. Here, the compassionate staff at Porto Funeral Homes in New Haven County discusses the possible cremation services so you can make the best decision.

3 Different Cremation Service Options

1. Complete

A complete cremation service is almost identical to a traditional funeral. The one major difference is instead of a casketed burial following the service, cremation will take its place. To accommodate a viewing, a cremation casket can be used, or the family can use a rental casket. After the viewing, service, and cremation, the remains can either be buried, scattered, or returned to a close family member for safekeeping.

2. Immediate

cremation servicesThis type involves the immediate disposition of the body. It’s often followed by a memorial service at a later time. With an immediate cremation service, many funeral homes suggest having a private viewing for the family. Whether or not the body will need to be embalmed is dependent on the viewing time. If you plan to hold the viewing shortly after the death, it won’t be needed, but if you wait more than 12 hours, embalming is strongly encouraged and sometimes even required.

3. Direct

A direct cremation involves the funeral home taking the deceased into their care for cremation without a viewing, visitation, wake, or funeral. Typically, the family members and friends will hold a memorial service at a later date.
