An infestation of bedbugs is both troubling and inconvenient. Unlike other pests, getting rid of them is also more complicated. Hiring a professional exterminator will increase your chances of eradicating them. Though, there are also some methods you can employ yourself to begin the process of doing so.

How to Kill Bedbugs

1. Assess the Infestation

Bedbugs happily dwell in more than just your bed. They thrive in all sorts of nooks and crannies, including drawers, books, and cardboard boxes. If the infestation is in more than one room, it's critical to schedule a professional bedbug extermination service.

2. Clear the Room

Pull furniture away from the walls, securely bag up all washable pieces, and responsibly dispose of infested items. Do not move contaminated items into a room that does not have bedbugs. Seal them in black garbage bags and place them in the sun, as the heat will kill them.

3. Start Laundry

BedbugsLaunder washable items with hot water (at a minimum of 120 degrees Fahrenheit), followed by drying them on high heat for at least 30 minutes. The temperatures will kill the pests. Do not put items back until you have sanitized the room.

4. Deal With the Bed

Remove bedbugs from the bed frame, headboard, and footboards using a vacuum and scrub brush. Since you cannot use insecticide on your mattress, you will need to throw it away or purchase a bedbug mattress cover. The covers zip completely, which suffocates the insects–you simply throw the cover away after 12 to 18 months. When you reassemble the bed, install bedbug interceptors at the feet.

5. Start the Removal Process

Using a hard-bristled brush, scrub the surface of the room where you've found evidence of bedbug activity. Then, suck up all of the remnants using a vacuum. After you've finished, seal the matter in a trash bag and take it outside.

6. Call a Professional Exterminator

Though these measures to prevent future infestations can be helpful, bedbug extermination services are usually a more effective treatment. Since these parasites live in small crevices, they can be difficult to kill without professional-grade pesticides. Chemical treatments are the best way to eliminate a bedbug problem.
