The pizza revolution began in the country of Italy. It was considered a poor man’s food because it required two cheap, easily accessible ingredients–tomatoes and pizza dough. In the later 19th century, pizza made its way to the U.S. by way of Italian immigrants. The first true American pizzeria was opened by Gennaro Lombardi and was located in Little Italy in New York City. The popular dish took off from there and became a national sensation enjoyed by many.
