When a close friend experiences a loss, you might find that he or she changes significantly. Grief doesn't affect everyone the same, so it can be difficult to know what to do to help them through the process. Arndt Funeral Home of Rochester, NY, offers these suggestions on how to help a friend cope with the loss of a loved one.

The Do's & Don'ts of Supporting a Grieving Friend

Do Offer to Help

Whether it's washing dishes, doing laundry, or mowing the grass, providing assistance with daily chores is always appreciated, especially around the time of the funeral service. When you're grieving, it's hard to think about mundane tasks, so offering to manage those for your friend is an easy way to help. Also, if they don't have family nearby, ask if you can assist with funeral arrangements.

Don't Make It About You

Sometimes, in an attempt to sympathize, many people say, "I know how you feel." Though it's often meant kindly, statements like that can minimize a person's feelings. Instead, say something like, "I'm so sorry you're going through this. It must be incredibly difficult."

Do Allow Them to Express Their Emotions

Funeral HomeCrying is very emotionally and mentally cleansing. Though it may be uncomfortable for you to see your friend in distress, it's a healthy way to release pent up sadness and anxiety. Also, be available to discuss their feelings. If they feel up to it, talk to them about their loved one.

Don't Forget to Communicate

Grief is an isolating feeling. Even if you're unavailable to visit your friend, make time for frequent phone calls and text messages. Try to uplift their spirits by sending cards and small gifts that show you're thinking of them.

Do Extend Invitations

It's easy to feel lonely when you're grieving. Your friend might feel guilty for enjoying events when they are supposed to feel sad. It's helpful to encourage your friend gently to attend social functions. However, don't get too aggressive about invitations, especially when it's large groups of people or strangers. Allow them the opportunity to say no.

Grieving people need a tremendous amount of compassionate support, including from the funeral home they choose.
