With the cooler months drawing near, there are a few things you can do to prepare your home before the cold sets in. The home insurance experts at Jenkins & Bevan Insurance in Lorain County, OH, have been helping people avoid the unexpected since 1954. Here, they share what you should include on your late-summer checklist.

Your Home Insurance End-of-Summer Checklist

1. Check Smoke Detectors

home insuranceIt can be easy to forget about smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, but you should test them regularly to make sure they’re working properly. Simply hit the red button, and they should go off, just as they would in a crisis. In addition, make sure the batteries are changed regularly. If they don’t seem to work properly, replace them.

2. Clean the Gutters

Gutters can get clogged or detach themselves from the house, so do a check for that around the entire home. Is debris cleaned out? Is anything leaking? Insurance agents also recommend bringing in a professional to install gutter guards so you don’t have to continually clean them out during the fall and winter.

3. Change HVAC Filters

Every few months, you should replace your air filters so they’re clean and working efficiently. You likely ran your AC frequently during the summer, so the end of the season is the perfect time to change the filters to prepare for fall.
