A great contractor understands how to use most of his materials while leaving as little left over as possible at completion of the project. When you’ve purchased premium wood and building materials, you don’t want any of it to go to waste. Even the best craftsman can make a mistake, so don’t throw away those bad lumber cuts and make use of the material instead with some simple strategies.

When you’ve made a mistake in cutting an angled piece of moulding, correct the error by cutting a new angle just inside the bad cut. This will remove the defect while creating a piece of moulding with the angle that you do need. You can then simply add the length that you need by cutting the other side of the wood. Assuming you specify extra moulding for your projects, this should be very easy to do.

woodAnother common mistake made is an uneven cut that needs to be straight. To straighten out these cuts, a router is a good tool for shaping; these cuts can then be perfected with some sanding. When you do have those leftover unusable wood pieces, do not throw them away. Keep a container onsite with the extra pieces, as you’ll often be able to find a use for them later. These pieces are a great solution for small decorative parts and making screw plugs.
