In the digital era, it may seem like most children’s toys have evolved into electronic- and system-based devices. However, two time-proven brands continue to endure and capture children’s imaginations in ways that can’t be replicated. LEGO® and Playmobil®, two of the children’s toy industry’s largest manufacturers, have been an integral part of many kids’ lives. Their products can be found around the world and continue to offer hours of fun.

LEGO

children's toysWith a name that literally means “play well” in Danish, LEGO redefined the toy industry with their simple connecting blocks. The Danish company was founded in 1932 and has remained family-owned ever since.

Named “Toy of the Century” twice, the LEGO Group had a humble beginning in a carpenter’s workshop in Denmark. Their connecting blocks, sold exclusively in Denmark, quickly became a must-have toy, and the company soon expanded to international sales in the 1950s. By the 1960s, they had created over 218 different products and saw the opening of LEGOLAND®, a LEGO-based theme park in Billund, Denmark. LEGO defined itself perfectly in the 90’s with the tagline “Just Imagine…” and has since adopted numerous brands and themes into its product line. With an average yearly revenue of $2.1 billion, they remain one of the leading children’s toys manufacturers in the world and maintain a distinct niche in the market.

Playmobil

The face of the Playmobil figurine has become an internationally recognized image. Over the course of the company’s lifespan, this has led to numerous spinoffs, niche product lines, settings, and accessories. The company was founded in 1974 by German inventor Hans Beck, and, within less than a year, it became a worldwide product that generated nearly $3.5 million in its first year. The simplicity of their products is where their success has stemmed from. By providing just the basics, they open the door for endless possibilities and challenge the imagination. Generating around $700 million per year in sales, Playmobil remains a favorite and is the fourth highest-selling toy company in the world.
