Chicken wings are an American classic—a staple you can sample in every sports bar from coast to coast. Believe it or not, however, the spicy, finger-licking favorite is only 45 years old. How did the tasty snack get its start? Discover the bar food’s beginnings with this handy history lesson.

Buffalo Origins

wingsThey’re known as “Buffalo wings” for a reason. Anchor Bar, a family restaurant in Buffalo, NY, served up the first plate of wings in 1964. Invented by co-owner Teressa Bellissimo, they were covered in her own special sauce with a hearty helping of blue cheese and celery. Why? It’s what she had available. Today, enter any sports bar and enjoy wings in an endless variety of savory sauces and accompaniments—although celery remains the go-to garnish.

Twists on the Tale

There are various twists on how Teressa invented her signature recipe. While her husband stated the restaurant had received an accidental shipment of wings, her son explained he was partying with friends, hungry, and just wanted a midnight bar snack to wash down the drinks. Both could be true, or Teressa could have been thinking more creatively that night. However they were invented, Buffalo still claims the classic snack.

Beyond Buffalo

After their invention, Buffalo wings remained a regional New York classic. As their popularity grew, they began spreading to nearby areas. By 1980, they were a nationwide phenomenon, and, in 1993, Philadelphia was the first city to host an annual wing-eating contest, which continues to draw in thousands of people each year. Now, you can savor this bar-food staple anywhere in the country.
