While signing a lease on a new apartment is exciting, you may not be as enthusiastic about moving. Whether your new place is across the country or just across town, the process can be stressful and tiring. Luckily, with a few expert tips, you can get organized for the big day. Here, Big John Movers of Cincinnati, OH, shares some advice for simplifying your packing and moving checklist.

4 Ways to Make Moving Easier

1. Save Money & Time on Packing

Look around your apartment—a lot of your things are “packed” already. There’s no need to remove items and put them in expensive moving boxes if you don’t have to. Keep clothes folded in their drawers and lock them in place with plastic wrap. When it comes to your closet, keep clothes on hangers and put them in garbage bags. Use items around your house—such as empty trash cans, laundry hampers, and luggage—as moving boxes. Rather than buying bubble wrap, use towels and clothes to wrap breakable items.

2. Prevent Damage

Stacking plates vertically makes them more resistant to chips and cracks. Don’t bother wrapping them in newspaper or bubble wrap—simply put foam plates in between dishes so they won’t knock against each other. When packing toiletries, put plastic wrap under each lid to prevent leakage during the move. If you’re using tape to wrap certain pieces, don’t adhere it to the item itself—tape may ruin the paint or finish.

3. Save Your Back

Put towels under heavy objects so you can slide them across the floor instead of lifting them. Rent a hand truck for heavier objects, and if you have a lot of stuff, enlist the help of professional movers.

4. Make Unpacking Easy

For ease with unpacking, color code your boxes for each room, and as you carry in boxes from the truck, put them in the appropriate rooms right away. Make sure to label the sides of the boxes, not the top, so the labels are visible when the boxes are stacked. If you’ve disassembled furniture or other items, keep the screws and hardware in individual plastic bags, then tape them to the object to which they belong. For electronics, use your phone to take pictures of the cords and cables before you unplug them so you’ll have a reference when hooking them back up.
