A canker sore is a small, shallow ulcer in the mouth commonly discovered and treated by dentists. Canker sores can make it difficult to speak or eat and can be uncomfortable or even painful, especially for children. Four Corners Dental Group is a team of expert, compassionate family and pediatric dentists who care about the oral health of you and your kids. They explain how to treat canker sores in children, so they are less uncomfortable and heal faster.

Even though canker sores can be painful, it’s important for your child to continue their usual oral care routine to keep their mouth clean and prevent more lesions from appearing on the cheeks or gums. Explain to your little one that although it hurts, a clean mouth will help their sore heal faster. You can also help them by purchasing a soft baby toothbrush and kids’ liquid gel toothpaste to use until the sore disappears.

Anchorage-DentistTell your child to clean around the canker sore, carefully avoiding brushing over it. When they’re finished, help them floss their teeth. Skip the teeth immediately around the sore, working to floss as many other pearly whites as possible. If your kid is experienced in using mouthwash, have them swish with an antibacterial rinse without alcohol. You can also apply a kid-friendly oral numbing gel on each ulcer with the tip of a soft cotton swab.

While the canker sore heals, give your child a soft, bland diet, choosing foods such as oatmeal, applesauce, macaroni and cheese, scrambled eggs, plain yogurt, protein shakes, and pancakes. Monitor their fluid intake, encouraging them to drink soothing beverages, like ice water or cold milk. Avoid savory or spicy foods, acidic fruit juices, sodas, and acidic vegetables like tomatoes.

After the sore heals, commend your child for their bravery and remind them about the importance of good oral hygiene to keep canker sores and other dental problems away. If the sore does not heal on its own after a few weeks or continues to spread, call the dentist for advice. Do not hesitate to make an emergency dentist appointment if your child is in severe pain, cannot drink enough fluids, or has a fever.

Even if you care for your child’s dental health with routine oral care appointments and a regular brushing and flossing regimen, problems like canker sores can occur.
