There are various types of dentistry, from cosmetic to general, pediatric to restorative dentistry. If you’ve never heard of the latter, it’s likely that you already have some experience with it — or you will in the future. Below, Michael Helmbrecht, DDS, in Fairbanks, AK, explains what restorative dentistry is and who may benefit from it.

What Is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is the practice of bringing a person’s oral health back to normal. This may mean fixing teeth that have cavities, installing crowns, or even creating partial dentures. Restorative dentistry also includes diagnosing and managing diseases such as gingivitis. Some cosmetic dentistry needs are included too, such as creating and applying veneers to address cracked, uneven, or chipped teeth for a full smile makeover.

Who Can It Help?

restorative dentistryAt some point in life, it’s likely that everyone will need restorative dentistry. Most people will have a cavity that requires filling or need a crown. Or maybe they want to whiten or even out their smile with veneers. If you have tooth or gum pain, you may have a periodontal disease or tooth problem that will require restorative dentistry procedures.

Older people are especially likely to require restorative dentistry, as they are susceptible to osteoporosis and gum disease. They may also need dental implants, removable partial artificial teeth, or full dentures in order to smile, eat, and speak normally.

By getting regular dental checkups every six months, you may be able to prevent the need for extensive restorative dentistry by catching a disease or cavity in its early stages. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily are two other forms of prevention worth following.
