Annual visits to the gynecologist are an essential part of preventative reproductive health services. But, new recommendations about pap smears may spare women the need to set up regular gynecology exams. Below, is some insight into these recent guidelines and a brief discussion about the frequency with which you should visit a clinic.

New Recommendations for Gynecology Checks

Introduced by the American College of Physicians (ACP) in 2014, the new recommendations are based on a systemic review of available statistics. Per their findings, the ACP advises non-pregnant and low-risk women against getting yearly pelvic exams. Although still a big proponent of routine screening, the organization recommends women to start getting pap smears at the age of 21 and repeat them every three years until they turn 29.

GynecologistThey recommend a more relaxed schedule for healthy women above 30, advising them to repeat pap smears every five years. Performing pap smears in conjunction with HPV tests is sufficient for women at low risk for cervical cancer. These guidelines also consider it unnecessary for women 65 and older to get yearly pap smears.

Annual Gynecologist Visits

While recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) were unchanged in the beginning, the organization did embrace ACP guidelines later. Their helpful infographic provides clear and concise insights into these recommendations while emphasizing more frequent screenings for high-risk patients.

Consulting with your OB-GYN about both sets of opinions can help you determine the right checkup schedule for your health requirements. Being aware of your medical and reproductive history puts them in the best position to decide the right interval for your pelvic exam. Even if you’re at low risk for HPV and cervical cancer, get in touch with your gynecologist in case of unexplained bleeding or pelvic discomfort.
