Most people who wear contact lenses have slept in them at some point in their lives. They might have been stuck somewhere without a case or solution, or perhaps they simply fell asleep on the couch. “Breathable” and extended-wear contact lenses have hit the market in recent years, however, it is still best to take your lenses out before going to bed.

Here is why taking your contact lenses out before a nap or bedtime is strongly recommended:

  • Prevents Infection: Taking your contact lenses out every night is one of the best ways to prevent eye infections. Microscope corneal abrasions caused by contact with the lens’ back surface leave your eyes vulnerable to parasites and bacteria. Unclean contacts, or those splashed with water, can also cause infections, including those from water-loving acanthamoeba parasites. Corneal ulcers are a potential issue, as well.
  • contact lensesPromotes Healthy Cornea Activity: Keeping contact lenses in throughout the night prevents your corneas from enjoying healthy nutrient intake. The lenses act as barriers that prevent tears and aqueous humor, a type of gelatinous fluid, from nourishing and lubricating the corneas. Your contacts also move considerably less while you are asleep, meaning your eyes receive little to no oxygen.
  • Sidesteps Inflammation: Yet another reason to always take your lenses out before bed is corneal inflammation. According to a 2012 study, the risk of keratitis, or inflammation of the cornea, increases even when sleeping in contacts is infrequent. Those who use extended-wear options are not immune, as their risk of ulcerative keratitis increases 10 to 15 times compared to daily wear users.
