Diving Center Instructors Share a Brief Guide to Freediving, Kettering, Ohio

When enjoying fun on the water, few things are more thrilling than exploring the aquatic life and vegetation just below the surface. For those who’ve mastered their scuba skills and want to try something more challenging, the professionals at Southern Ohio Diving Academy suggest freediving. The activity requires divers to hold their breath, instead of relying on oxygen tanks. Based in Dayton, the diving center provides area residents with scuba lessons and diving equipment to help them remain safe in the water.

Below, the instructors at this local diving center highlight a few important things to know about freediving:

  • History: Freediving dates back to ancient times when people would hold their breath under water to gather food, obtain valuable resources like pearls and sponges, or scavenge for treasures lost at sea. In recent years, the activity has gained popularity for recreational pursuits, including underwater photography, fishing, and playing sports.
  • diving centerEquipment: Minus the oxygen apparatus, freedivers use similar gear as their scuba diving counterparts. They wear masks, snorkels, and wetsuits. Fins specifically designed for this activity include the single-foot bi-fins and monofins, which slip over both feet. When freediving in open water, divers use buoys. They secure a line that gives divers a place to rest when emerging from the water.
  • Types: There are seven different types of freediving. Static apnea simply tests how long a diver can stay under water, dynamic tests the distance they can swim in a single breath, and free immersion examines the depths they can go. With constant weight freediving without fins, the diver solely relies on their abilities without any additional equipment. With the variable weight approach, heavy sleds are used to push swimmers farther under water, while no-limits freediving uses the sled for submergence and an inflatable lift bag to come back up.
