Diagnosed With Glaucoma? Discover How to Treat This Common Eye Disease, Greece, New York

Glaucoma has the potential to cause blindness, so it can be unsettling if you’ve recently been diagnosed. Fortunately, when treated in time, this common eye disease can be managed without blindness developing. Below, discover some of the top ways that glaucoma can be treated.

Eye Drops

glaucomaThe first line of defense against glaucoma is with medicated eye drops. These eye drops are absorbed into the bloodstream once administered. Since glaucoma causes increased pressure within the eyeball, which damages the optic nerve, medicated eye drops aim to relieve this pressure. Some drops do so by helping fluid within the eye drain more efficiently, while others reduce the amount of watery fluid the eye produces. To help absorption of your eye drops, it’s best to close your eyes for one or two minutes and press your finger against the skin in between your nose and tear ducts. This will prevent the drops from draining into the nose. Consult with your eye doctor if you need assistance.

Medication

When drops can’t adequately control eye pressure levels, your eye doctor might prescribe medication. These pills will typically aid in reducing production of fluid in the eyes, but it’s important to speak with your physician about any other medications you’re taking because they can potentially cause dangerous interactions.

Surgery

When conservative treatment isn’t enough, you might be referred to an eye surgeon for glaucoma surgery. There are two main types of laser surgery — trabeculoplasty and iridotomy. Trabeculoplasty is usually for patients suffering from open-angle glaucoma, and during the procedure, you eye surgeon will enhance the drainage angle in your eye with a laser. An iridotomy is for patients who have angle-closure glaucoma, and the goal of the procedure is to help fluid drain by making a small hole in the iris.
