The Oral-Systemic Link Explained, Manhattan, New York

The Oral Systemic Link

What is "oral systemic health"?
Oral systemic health is the connection between oral health and overall health. Many studies have demonstrated a link between poor oral health and systemic disease such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and even pregnancy complications.
These connections between the mouth and the body highlight the importance of good oral health and dental stability in assuring better general health.

Conditions in your mouth may be impacting your general health. A physician can help diagnose and treat systemic diseases. But these diseases are often tied directly with the health of your teeth and gums. This is when a dentist and hygienist can help treat and prevent further complications.

What can I do at home to protect my oral health?
Periodontal disease and tooth decay are diseases of bacterial origin. By making good oral health a priority, you can be better assured of a health mouth and of lowered risk factors for developing other general health problems. Good daily practices include brushing your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes, flossing, use antibacterial mouthrinse, and any other tools/devices recommended to you from your dental professional.

How often should I get a dental checkup and cleaning?

It is recommended for most people with healthy gingiva and mouth to visit the dentist every 6 months for a checkup and cleaning. Those with periodontitis or other oral/medical complications may need to visit the dentist more often as recommended by their dental professional.
At these visits, your dentist will look for any caries, diseases, pathologies, and/or malignancies. Many of which may be non-symptomatic by the individual, however early detection is always the best route.

So what now?
Book an appointment with your regular dentist. If you don’t have one or are too busy to go to the dentist, then have them come to you! A new dental service has emerged in New York City, where the dentist travels to the patient’s home to perform these preventative services, which includes checkup, cleanings and x-rays. Prices are more reasonable, if not, even cheaper than average in-office services. You may book them online at https://smilesdeliverednyc.com/services/ or call (917) 383-0933.
