Are you one of those people who hates going to the dentist? For many patients, the thought of upcoming dental work is enough to give them a racing heart and sweaty palms. However, you may not know you can maximize the comfort of your next dental visit with medication. The specialists at Oral Surgery Associates of Alaska in Anchorage have experience with many different types of sedation dentistry to make your upcoming visit a little less anxiety filled.

Types of Medications Used in Sedation Dentistry

1. Oral Anti-Anxiety Medications

Whether they don't like the sound of the drill or are traumatized from bad experiences at the dentist as a child, a dental appointment is the cause of significant stress for some individuals. If you experience intense anxiety about the dentist, you should consider obtaining a prescription for oral anti-anxiety medications. Many patients take a pill the night before and immediately before an appointment to help ease their nervousness.

2. Nitrous Oxide

sedation dentistryAlso known as laughing gas, this form of jitter relief is less intense than IV or general sedation. Patients breathe in the gas through a rubber mask placed over their nose. Nitrous oxide is said to make people feel "floaty" and relaxed. As the name implies, it can also give some patients the giggles after it's administered. The effects wear off quickly after the gas is turned off. Nitrous oxide is used frequently in routine procedures.

3. IV Medication

Patients with intense anxiety or those undergoing a more in-depth procedure may speak with their dentist about IV medication. Patients are given a drug that will cause them to be conscious but incredibly sleepy and lethargic. The dental team carefully monitors the medication and the patient's reaction to it throughout the appointment. This tactic is helpful for procedures such as implants, palate grafts, or other oral surgery procedures that are lengthy. Patients who opt for this type of sedation must have someone available to drive them home. Additionally, food and drinks must be monitored afterward to prevent stomach irritation.

Do these methods sound like they would be an ideal way to help you combat your dental phobia? Oral Surgery Associates of Alaska is available to answer your questions about sedation dentistry. Call (907) 561-1430 or visit them online to schedule your next appointment.
