The temperature is dropping, and like many homeowners, you might find yourself wondering if you’re doing all you can to protect your home’s plumbing throughout the winter season. Joe Klosterman Plumbing, Inc. has been providing unparalleled plumbing services to the Cincinnati area for over 30 years, and as locals and homeowners themselves, their experienced plumbers know all about winter home care. They know that doing a couple of well thought out things during the coldest months of the year can make all the difference in protecting your residential plumbing systems.

Follow these three easy tips this winter to protect your pipes:

  • Keep the heat on: This might seem obvious, but many people leave town during the winter months and turn off their heat. Without warm air circulating, pipes are much more likely to freeze. Upon your return, you might find frozen pipes, or worse, a flooded home due to pipes that have frozen and then cracked. Keep your home heated to at least 50 degrees and you should be fine.
  • Leave the water running: During the coldest winter evenings, it may be worthwhile to leave your faucets on overnight. Just a trickle of water is enough to prevent your pipes from freezing as moving water freezes less readily.
  • Wrap your pipes: If you have a cold basement and you’re concerned about your pipes freezing, you can wrap the pipes in your basement. Pipe insulation and heating tape can protect your pipes from freezing even in the colder areas of your home. You may also want to consider insulating the windows in your basement to help retain heat.
