Bed bugs have been making big news in the last couple of years. If you’re not sure what all the fuss is about, then it’s high time you arm yourself with a little knowledge from the experts.

Select Pest Control has been ridding Cincinnati-area homes of bed bugs and other vermin for over 30 years, and they have seen it all. While there are many types of unwanted household pests, the exterminators at Select Pest Control agree that bed bugs are the most destructive and persistent of all unwanted visitors. Here are some facts about bed bugs that you might not know:

  • Bed bugs can lurk undiscovered for a long time. Bed bugs reproduce very quickly and tend to gravitate toward dark, covered spaces. This means they often go undetected until there is a full-blown infestation. If you’ve already spotted bed bugs, odds are high that you have a lot of them; call an exterminator immediately.
  • Bedbugs leave some telltale signs. Everyone knows that bed bugs bite, but bed bug bites often look and feel similar to many other types of bug bites. If you suspect you may have bed bugs, check for black marks on the underside of your mattress, around baseboards, and inside drawers. The marks will look almost as if someone has taken a felt tip pen and colored on your furniture. If you see these marks in an area, you’ve found a bed bug hotspot.
  • Bed bugs can destroy everything. Mice can get into your kitchen cabinets and ruin your food, but bed bugs can destroy much more. They can live in nearly anything. They often set up shop inside wood, cracked plastic, mattresses, clothing, comforters, pillows, curtains, baseboards, walls, and even between the pages of books.

Bed bugs are difficult, but not impossible, to get rid of. The real takeaway is that if you spot any signs of bed bugs, you should act immediately. Home remedies like bug bombs and caulking rarely work. Calling in pest control professionals can save you money in the long run by saving your stuff from these destructive critters.
