August 22 is National Tooth Fairy Day, and you can get the whole family excited about their oral health by celebrating it together. The origin stories of the tooth fairy are not consistent among various sources, but there are some proven facts. For example, in the early 1920s, kids were encouraged to take care of themselves through all kinds of advertisements containing health care fairies. Then, in 1927, the tooth fairy came to life in a short play by Esther Watkins Arnold.

Regardless of the practice’s precise origins, though, you can celebrate National Tooth Fairy Day with the following tips from the family dentistry team at Lowitz & Meier in Cincinnati, OH:

1. Make Tooth Fairy Pillows

Get the family together, and spend the afternoon making tooth fairy pillows. This crafty DIY project will make it easy for the tooth fairy to find your kid’s teeth—and leave a special treat!

2. Teach Your Kids About Oral Health by Coloring Together

Visit your local library, and look for age-appropriate books about the tooth fairy for your children. Check out a few of them to read at home together before bed. If your library has a DVD section, you can also rent The Tooth Fairy and host a family movie night.

Make sure you stress the importance of taking care of your teeth when celebrating National Tooth Fairy Day. In addition to brushing and flossing every day, your children should also visit the dentist office every six months.
