Paint has the power to transform and refresh a space without seriously denting the homeowner’s bank account. If you are getting ready to have the interior of your house painted, there are a few things you need to do to save time and money. Whether you are only painting a few rooms or the entire house, a little interior paint preparation goes a long way.

Use the following tips to make things easier for your painting contractors:

  • Remove Furniture: Remove as much furniture as possible, and store it in your basement or a nearby storage unit until the project is complete. If some furniture is too heavy and cumbersome to move, cover each piece with a durable plastic or tarp material. Fabric sheets are not recommended because any spilled paint may bleed onto the furniture.

  • interior paintStore Wall Decor: Store all wall decor in your garage, basement, or storage unit. Carefully wrap the decor as needed to protect it from damage. If you have priceless artwork or other items requiring specific temperatures, opt for a climate-controlled storage unit.

  • Cover Flooring: Protect flooring from paint and dirt with durable canvas drop cloths. Plastic sheeting is a potential alternative, but it is subject to puncturing from high-heeled shoes and anything else that is sharp. Place all rugs in storage rather than covering them.

  • Clean the Walls: Clean your walls, so they are free of all debris, dust, and oil. Use a mild detergent and water solution, clean rag, and a ladder to reach dust-filled corners. Get rid of mold, mildew, and grease stains with a white vinegar and water mixture.

  • Fill In Holes: Remove nails and fill holes in drywall with a repair kit to provide your painting contractors with smooth surfaces. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and give the drywall plenty of time to cure before the contractors arrive.
