When it comes to your overall wellness, how much importance do you place on your eye? Although most people put off routine eye exams until they notice there is a problem with their vision, visiting your eye doctor regularly is a must if you want to maintain your eyesight for the long haul. Here is a little more information about how often you should be visiting your eye doctor and why.

Understanding Routine Eye Exams

How Often Should You Visit Your Eye Doctor?

eye doctorThe frequency of your eye visits depends largely on your current eye health and age. For example, if you have the need for glasses, you should be visiting your eye doctor at least once a year to verify your prescription. Children should visit an eye doctor before they begin school. Most adults between the ages of 20–39 should visit the eye doctor every three to five years. While people within the same age range, with a family history or higher risk of eye disease, for example African-Americas, should attend eye exams every two to four years. All adults between 40–64 should have routine eye exams every two to four years, and by the time you are 65, you should be meeting with your eye doctor every year for a comprehensive eye exam.

Why Are Routine Exams Important?

During routine exams, your doctor will check your eyes for a wide range of issues, including glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Your vision will also be tested using a variety of different methods, including reading lines of text from a distance, special devices to check your glass prescription or machines to analyze the anatomy of the eye. Routine exams are important for diagnosing potentially progressive vision disorders early on, before they cause long-term disabilities like blindness.
