Sitting Too Much? How Bad Is It?
It might not be a shock that sitting a lot makes you more likely to be obese. But apart from obesity, excessive sitting is linked with all sorts of other health problems — even if you vigorously exercise after spending a whole day at work in your chair.
Sitting for a long time causes muscles to burn less fat and decreases the blood flow to your muscles. Both can increase the risk of injury, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other problems.
Sitting for extended periods, or any other activity that requires repetitive movements, leads to muscle imbalances (muscles that become too short/tight or too long). When we sit for extended periods the muscles that typically become tight are the hip flexor muscles, our chest muscles, responsible for reaching forward and typing on the keyboard, and the muscles of our neck usually used to get a closer look at the computer screen.
So what’s the solution to minimize tightness throughout the day?
Fixing this problem is easier than you think. Take a stretch break! Set recurring reminders on your computer every 60- 90 minutes to remind you to stand up and stretch.
We invite you to one of our 4 offices and consult with a Physical Therapist. See what muscles imbalances you may have and learn the specific stretches you can do throughout your day to keep you feeling loose and limber. For more intense pain or tightness a few physical therapy or chiropractic visits may help speed up your recovery process.
Schedule your evaluation today and work pain-free!
