Children develop so quickly, growing and learning new skills each day. It can be hard to accurately track their progress, especially if you’re considering a preschool program. According to the professionals at High Point Friends School, a Quaker school in North Carolina, preschools start accepting kids as young as 2 and a half, but that doesn’t always mean they’re ready.

How Do You Know if Your Child Is Ready for Preschool?

Independence

Children must have certain basic skills before starting a preschool program. Can you child eat food without help, use the bathroom, and sleep alone? How a child deals with separation is important, too. Children who are used to having relatives or friends care for them tend to be more comfortable with the separation required for preschool. However, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. If you’re not sure, most preschools will allow a trial period—where you can drop your child off for an hour or two to lessen separation anxiety.

Consistent Schedule

preschoolMost preschools stick to a predictable routine each day to help kids feel comfortable and safe. Is your child used to sticking to a specific schedule? If not, it might help to create one. Start with meals, making sure your child eats around the same time each day. Then develop an evening ritual—bath time, story time, and then bedtime. Creating a standardized schedule at home can help children adjust to preschool routines.

Energy & Physical Stamina

Whether the preschool you’re considering has a half- or full-day program, it requires a certain amount of energy and physical stamina. Kids will be asked to participate in different activities, from art class to playground time. How does your child handle being busy? If he thrives on constant change without getting cranky, preschool is a good option. If not, you might need to wait a little longer or consider a half-day program.
