DIY Model Car Display Case in 5 Simple Steps

1. Plan It Out

Select the cars you wish to display and measure them. You’ll want to give each one an inch of room on either side. Determine the width of the slots based on your largest model item, adding 2 inches to its width for the appropriate number. Next, determine the height and length of the cabinet: How many rows and columns do you want? Map it out on a piece of paper so you have a clear idea.

2. Make the Cabinet Frame

3. Install Shelves & Back

Shelves will consist of hardwood resting on dowels secured to the cabinet frame. Refer to your plan from step one to know exactly where each dowel needs to go and make marks accordingly. Using a ½-inch bit, drill a small hole at each mark. Cut the dowels into one-inch pegs, insert a bit of wood glue into each hole, and place a peg inside. Forge shelves from hardboard to rest on top of the pegs. Finally, cut a piece of the same material tailored to fit the frame, and pin it on the back.

4. Make & Attach the Door

Cut framing wood to the same dimensions as the cabinet, then assemble the products using wood glue and framing staples. Secure glass to the door with glue and tacks. Finally, you can attach the door to the unit by introducing hinges, and securing it with a hook-eye closure on the opposite side of the hinge.

5. Finishing Touches

The final step is to beautify your work. Sand down all the wood portions, then use a tack cloth to remove excess dust. Apply varnish of your choice, being careful not to get any on the glass. Once dry, you can mount the cabinet and display your model car collection.
