Adding a water feature to your lawn is an excellent way to create a relaxing atmosphere for spending your free time. However, if you do install one, there is some regular maintenance you will have to perform. This keeps the water looking nice and clean and ensures problems don’t arise that could shorten the feature’s lifespan.

3 Water Feature Maintenance Tips

1. Check the Water Level

Most water features require a submersible water pump to cycle the water through the system. These pumps must be completely submerged under the water at all times. When they are not, they will not work correctly. To avoid this, you should regularly check the water level in your fountain or pond. Factors like humidity, direct sun exposure, and high temperatures will cause the water to evaporate more quickly.

2. Inspect Filters & Screens

water feature clearwater mnFilters and screens are placed over the intake opening of the pump to keep out large debris. However, if they are not regularly inspected and cleaned of debris, the water flow will start to suffer. If it has been a while since your last inspection, and you’ve noticed your fountain struggling to put out water, it is also a good idea to go ahead and inspect the intake opening and the housing around the impeller. An accumulation of small debris could get lodged in these areas and prevent them from working.

3. Clean the Impeller

Whether you have clean or dirty tap water, the impeller can still become encrusted with minerals and sediments. To keep it working smoothly, you’ll need to remove and clean it. If you’d like to minimize how often this is necessary, consider using distilled or well-filtered water in your fountain, instead. You can also prevent this type of buildup by regularly changing out the water.
