EATING FOR CONTROL
 

For some people, being in control is an important issue when it comes to eating. Studies show that perfectionists and top achievers seem to have more of a control issue than others do. They want to be the richest, smartest, thinnest, best looking, etc. Such individuals will then eat to feed feelings of inferiority when they find someone better looking, thinner or smarter than them. They may try to control their eating by depriving themselves when they're hungry and eating when they are not. If you feel you eat for a sense of control, ask yourself a few questions: How do I feel when this other person is around? What does this person do or say that makes me want to turn to food? When I feel I am not in control of the situation, do I turn to food? Eating as a form of control over circumstances or eating as a form of self-control can lead to eating while ignoring hunger cues & body needs.

It's important for people with control issues to remember that eating for any reason other than for hunger does not help control things. The feeling of control for such individuals comes from the fact that they feel they are taking action even though it is an inappropriate solution to a problem.If control is an issue for you, concentrate on self-respect instead of self-control. Respect your body's hunger signals when it is hungry and when it is full. Be responsible to yourself, be respectful of yourself, and take appropriate action instead of eating to solve problems.
