Tooth enamel is the hard substance covering and protecting your teeth from bacteria. It’s one of the strongest substances in your body, but it’s not invulnerable. Acid from foods can erode the enamel, leaving you with visible damage. Fortunately, your dentist can prescribe products to help rebuild your enamel.

3 Visible Signs of Dental Erosion

1. Translucent Teeth

If the outer edges of your teeth are starting to appear translucent, you have the beginnings of enamel erosion. This occurs because enamel is not an opaque substance, and as layers of it wear away, you can begin to see through it. People with Celiac disease, morning sickness, bulimia, or GERD are particularly susceptible to erosion.

2. Rounded Shape

dentistEnamel loss can change the shape of your teeth. The edges will appear worn down, and they may look shorter or have a rounded appearance. Avoiding soda and juice, which are both highly acidic, is one easy way to prevent erosion in the first place.

3. Discoloration

Tooth enamel is white, but underneath, your teeth are a light brown. As your enamel wears away, more of the light brown color shows through your enamel, making your smile appear yellowed. Teeth whitening can remove stains from teeth, but it cannot rebuild the enamel.

If you have any of these visible signs of erosion, talk to your dentist about restoring the health and the beauty of your smile. Dental veneers and enamel remineralization are two possible treatments that will help you feel more confident in your dental health.
