3 Tips for Maximizing the Security of Your Storage Unit, Anchorage, Alaska

Just like your home, your storage unit is susceptible to break-ins and natural disasters. Fortunately, you can take steps to maximize the security of your unit before you even move your belongings in. The storage experts at International Self Storage in Anchorage, AK, recommend using these tips for preserving your items while they’re stowed away.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Storage Unit Secure

1. Choose a Secure Facility

storage unitNot all self-storage facilities provide 24-hour surveillance or extra security measures, so making sure the unit you rent is in a secure facility should be your first step. Choose a location that isn’t in a crime-prone area of town, and ask the facility staff what security measures are provided. Is there 24-hour video surveillance? Is a security guard or representative on the property at all times? Does the facility require an access code? All of these things can add an extra line of defense to safeguard your possessions.

2. Choose a Climate-Controlled Facility

Some of your belongings might be impacted by extreme changes in temperature, and Alaska is known for its frigid temperatures. That’s why a climate-controlled unit can help protect your belongings from weather-related damage. Heated units will also reduce the threat of mold or mildew growth due to unchecked moisture.

3. Use a High-Quality Lock on Your Unit

You will be required to secure your unit with a lock, but not just any lock will do. Choose a high-quality stainless steel model, such as a disc lock. Because of their design, these contraptions can’t be removed using bolt cutters, and hitting them with a hammer won’t break them open. Disc locks are also difficult to pick.

If security is a concern, call International Self Storage at (907) 563-2655 to learn about their secure facilities and pricing. You can also learn more about their two Anchorage locations on their website
