When most people visit the dentist, they're primarily worried about cavities. But gum disease is just as much of a threat to your dental health. Gum disease results from irritation and infection of the gums, causing them to swell and pull away from the teeth. If not treated promptly, gum disease can cause a range of problems up to tooth loss.

DentistGum disease doesn't start by loosening teeth. Instead, it begins with minor redness, discomfort, and easy bleeding. This early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, and can usually be treated at home with thorough, regular teeth cleaning including flossing.

If not treated, the problem will progress to periodontal disease. Here, the gums begin to recede from the teeth, forming pockets under the gum line where bacteria can easily hide. At this stage, the self-aggravating condition can only be treated by a dentist who will remove tartar and bacteria from the periodontal pockets. If allowed to progress further, gum disease will attack the roots of the teeth as well as the surrounding bone, causing tooth loss.

Gum disease prevention requires watching for the signs, both during oral exams and by yourself at home. Look out for any swelling or soreness. As the disease progresses, you may notice pus from under the gum line or persistent bad breath. If your teeth become loose, you need immediate treatment for the best chance of saving them.
