Most people are diligent about brushing, flossing, and biannual dental exams, but many don’t realize their pets need these things too. Dr. Singh, a veterinarian at Animal Care Center in Elk Grove, CA, treats cats and dogs for a variety of health issues, including periodontal disease. He and his staff explain four ways you can keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy.

4 Ways to Keep Your Pet’s Teeth Clean

1. Brush Daily

Brushing their teeth once every few weeks isn’t enough. It may sound daunting if you’ve never done it before, but it is completely doable, even with cats. You can use a soft-bristled brush, finger brush, or gauze and toothpaste formulated specially for pets. Gently brush the teeth and gums, making sure to get the back of the mouth as well.

2. Give Them a Healthy Diet

veterinarianYou probably know the importance of giving your pet a healthy diet, but it also plays a part in their oral health. In fact, if your pet has a history of oral health issues, a veterinarian may recommend a specific dental diet. These consist of special kibble which cleanses the teeth as it’s chewed. You can find these foods at many veterinary offices or your local pet store.

3. Throw Them a Bone

Tartar-control treats aren’t a substitute for daily brushing, but they can help as part of a full dental care routine. Also, give your cat or dog a bone to chew on. In the wild, animals chew on the bones of their prey, which knocks off tartar and stimulates the gums. Since most dogs and cats don’t hunt for their food, your veterinarian may recommend giving them bones as a treat.

4. Visit the Vet

All pets should have their teeth professionally cleaned at least once a year. Senior animals, or those with existing oral health problems, may need more frequent cleanings. The veterinarian will check the gums and teeth for tartar, redness, and other signs of disease. They might also take X-rays to check for issues below the gumline and in the bones.
