Well, it’s that time of year again – Time for the kids to head back to school!!

Every child wants to look their very best when they start their new school year.  Parents have gone shopping for new school clothes and new school supplies.  They’ve scheduled the kids appointments for their haircuts, but some may overlook one of their child’s most visible features – their smile.

A smile is the first thing people see when greeting someone.  One’s smile creates a positive self image, which is something we all want for our kids. Heading back to school is a great time for parents to reinforce good oral health habits.

A dental visit with Dr. Joy Lunan two times per year is a key part of every child’s oral health.  Children’s teeth change so much, since many are losing their baby teeth and getting their adult teeth, that it’s important for them to be looked at regularly.  Tooth decay is the most chronic childhood disease with 20% of school age children having untreated dental decay. If left untreated it can even impair your child’s ability to eat, speak, sleep and learn.  Taking your children to visit Dr. Lunan not only keeps their teeth healthy but it helps them to have positive dental experiences starting at a young age.

Back to school also means that it’s time for parent to start thinking about what they are going to pack in their child’s school lunches.  Dr. Lunan reminds parents to stay away from the prepackages chips and cookies, sodas and drink boxes – as these foods are high in sugar and fat. Avoid things like fruit roll ups or sticky fruit snacks.  These types of foods will get stuck in the grooves of your child’s teeth and since there probably will not be an opportunity for them to brush their teeth throughout the school day, the sugary food will likely stay there until they get a chance to brush before bed.

The good news is that there are other choices that are just as convenient as the prepackaged items and far healthier for your child’s teeth and body. Cheese is actually one of the best foods your child’s teeth because it neutralizes acids caused by bacteria and contains calcium which can help remineralize teeth. Try the single serve cheese sticks for more convenience.  Hard-boiled eggs are another healthy as well as convenient option that provides protein, which is helpful in tissue development. Crunchy fruits and vegetables such as apples, carrots, cucumbers and celery make delicious lunchbox snacks that actually help clean your child’s teeth.  By eating more fruits and vegetables your child can decrease their risk of cavities.  Increased calcium consumption and decreased sugar content with will not only aide your child while school is in session but throughout life.

Parents shouldn’t forget about after school snacks.  Many kids go straight to after school activities and their go to food is often times sugary foods and drinks from vending machines which are not good for their overall health.  Healthy foods will give your child  the fuel they need to do their best in their after school activities.

If your child is involved in playing sports, please consider a mouthguard. Dr. Lunan can provide your child with a custom made appliance to protect their teeth.

Good luck to your children in their upcoming school year!  Whether they are starting their first day of kindergarten or their senior year of high school, cherish every moment and every healthy smile!
