Termites are the scourge of any homeowner who’s had to deal with these pests. Incredibly destructive yet difficult to spot, they can ravage entire portions of a house before anyone even knows they’re there. Few would disagree that termite infestations can be devastating, but you can still protect your home with the right preparations. By familiarizing yourself with the signs of infestation, you’ll know when to call your local termite control team, Acme Pest Control.

Concord and Charlotte, NC’s leading pest removal service recommends watching out for these signs:

  • Mud Tubes/Tunnels: Termites construct networks of mud tubes for transporting and sharing food. These brown tubes are about the width of a pencil, and during an infestation, they can usually be found along your foundation, in your basement, or along the interior or exterior walls. Termites usually build new tunnels overnight.

  • Frass (Excrement): You can recognize termite droppings from their pellet-like appearance. You might find a pile of frass near potential entry points to your home, such as along the foundation. Frass can also be found indoors.

  • Hollowed Wood: Termites typically eat wood from the inside out in a honeycomb-like pattern, avoiding the surface of the wood. It’s common not to notice their presence until the damaged wood starts to sag, but you can still check for hollow wood by tapping it.

  • termite controlTermite Sounds: You may also hear the termites themselves, in some cases. When they’re traveling near the wood’s surface, moving termites make a papery or rustling sound. They may also make a dry rattle when they’ve been disturbed.

  • Termite Wings: When termites reach their reproductive stage (usually in the spring), they grow wings and take flight, looking for new places to colonize. Immediately notify a termite control professional when you see signs of “swarmers.”
