Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is the number one threat to a healthy mouth. This common ailment begins small with swollen gums, but, if left untreated, it can grow until it causes tooth loss and bone deterioration which will destroy your smile. Family dentist Dr. James Driskell of Anchorage Dental Center warns all his patients in Alaska to watch for the signs of gum disease and take steps to correct it.

At its earliest stage, gingivitis, gum disease is a minor problem. If your gums are red, swollen, or sore or bleed easily when flossing or brushing, you're at this stage. Gingivitis doesn't take a trip to the family dentist to cure; just be more thorough with your teeth cleaning, especially your flossing.

The irritated gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets which harbor bacteria and create more irritation. If you aren't careful, the infection can creep deep below your gum line to attack your tooth roots and your jaw.

In its latest stages, gum disease is extremely destructive. You may notice deep periodontal pockets, pus from beneath the gum line, or foul breath that doesn't go away with brushing. You'll also notice that your teeth begin to loosen. At this stage, the disease has done serious damage to your mouth, which only a dentist's intervention has a chance to fix. Deep cleaning, surgical pocket depth reduction, and even bone grafts may be necessary to keep your mouth stable and healthy.
