If you suffer from back pain, you are not alone. According to the American Chiropractic Association, 31 million American adults have lower back pain at any given moment, and it is the one of the most common reason for calling out of work. To relieve chronic or debilitating discomfort, regular spinal adjustments could be the answer, but if the pain is minor or intermittent, a few simple stretches may do the trick. Below, the knowledgeable team at Stroud Chiropractic in Archdale, NC, shares three exercises that may help between sessions with your chiropractor.

3 Stretches to Help With Your Back Pain

1. Knee to Chest

Lie down on your back with your legs straight. Then, slowly bend one of your knees up toward your head until you can wrap your arms around your thigh or shin, and continue pulling your knee toward your chest. Hold this stretch for 15 seconds before returning to the starting position. Repeat with the other leg, and do three full sets. This stretch will help align your pelvis while stretching your lower back.

2. Cobra Stretch

Lie on your stomach with your palms planted firmly on either side of you and your forearms resting flat on the ground. Push your torso up slowly while keeping your hips on the ground. Once you feel your lower back and abdominal muscles stretching, hold the position for 10 seconds. Return to the starting position slowly, and repeat the stretch four more times. This move will help stretch your core.

3. Cow/Cat Stretch

back painGet down on your hands and knees with your back parallel to the ground. Then, arch your back down and look upward for five seconds. Take a breath and arch your back up in the same way a cat might when they are frightened, and look down between your hands. Hold for five seconds. Repeat these movements for 30 seconds total to stretch your back muscles in two different directions and relieve tension along your spine.
