From getting ready in the morning to preparing meals at night, there are several ways for natural stone countertops to develop stains. Although scrubbing might seem like the best removal method, the professionals from Stone World at Red Bank know how to remove even the most stubborn stains. Their knowledge comes from in-depth experience installing countertops for New Jersey homeowners and providing tips on how to keep them looking great.

Below, they share three effective stain removal methods for natural stone countertops:

  • natural stone countertopsAvoiding Quartz Discoloration: Although quartz is a non-porous material, the resin used to hold it in place is vulnerable to stains. Contact with food and beverages kickstarts a chemical reaction on the coating, leading to discoloration. Use warm water and mild detergent to clean the surface, and gently scrub the area with a non-abrasive nylon pad. Avoid bleach-based cleaning agents and steel wool pads, as they can cause permanent damage.
  • Preventing Scratches on Marble: Marble is a porous material that’s highly susceptible to stains from liquids and dark powders—such as cumin and coffee grinds. Although you might be tempted to use whatever’s handy to wipe up the mess, don’t. Vinegar-based products cause corrosion, and scrubbing the surface will leave scratches in place of the stain. Instead, clean small spills with a soft cloth and warm water or hydrogen peroxide, using a gentle circular motion.
  • Going Gently on Granite: Granite is also porous, making everything from soda to ink stains cause for concern. If this happens, avoid wiping the mess, as you will only cause the stain to spread. For food and dirt stains, blot the area with hydrogen peroxide. You can use rubbing alcohol to get rid of ink and pure acetone for oil-based stains.
