Finding a reputable fence contractor can be just as difficult as determining the best fence type for your yard. Some fencing companies only offer certain materials like wood, vinyl, or iron, and you need a contractor that can install the exact fence you want. But how do you know a contractor is a reliable, experienced professional? Find out by asking these five questions before you sign a contract.

5 Questions to Ask Your Fence Contractor Before You Sign a Contract

How Long Has Your Company Been in Business?

Fence contractorFind out how long they have been in business under their current name. Reputable companies that have been in business for at least a year will have experience and satisfied clients for references. Additionally, ask if the business has an office. An official storefront indicates the size and reputation of the fence contractor. Without one, you could be hiring an unlicensed individual.

Are You Licensed, Bonded, & Insured?

Make sure the contractor is licensed to install fences in your state. Also, make sure the company is fully bonded and covered with general liability insurance and workers’ compensation. General liability insurance protects you from property damage caused during installation, and workers’ compensation ensures you are not liable for any injuries on the job.

Will You Provide a Written Contract?

A reputable fence contractor will provide a written agreement that protects both of you. These come in the form of a formal, written estimate that breaks down fees and costs. Labor, materials, and necessary services should each be listed as line items, and the estimate should include the start and projected end date.

Do You Use Subcontractors?

Some contractors, particularly large fencing businesses, might subcontract portions or all of the project to other individuals. While the work may be done well, it presents a potential liability to you. If a fence contractor uses subs, make sure they are licensed and covered under the company’s policies.

What Is Involved in Installation?

Will your contractor obtain the necessary permits? Do they identify buried utility lines or expect your utility company to do so? How deep will the posts go, and will your contractor use concrete? Make sure you know exactly what your fence contractor is going to do—and not do. Ask questions about how they plan to install your fence so you know exactly what you’re getting.
