Digging water wells is not as difficult as you think. Armed with a little information about the drilling process itself and high-quality equipment and techniques, you can follow along with the water well drilling professionals in your area. Doing this will help you feel confident that the job is being done correctly.

Make Room for the New

water wellsThe first step in drilling a well is to make room for the new equipment, first by drilling a bore hole. Your water well contractor will run water down a PVC pipe that has been cut to feature sharp teeth at one end. The contractor will rotate the pipe back and forth, using the teeth to break up dirt and soil until the water beneath has been located. Once the water has been discovered, the contractor will add a well screen pipe by sliding it through the PVC, and removing the PVC once the screen is in place. The screen is a piece of pipe with small slits along its side, allowing water to enter while keeping out dirt. Finally, your contractor will pull the original drill pipe out of the hole while leaving the new screen pipe in place, creating the new well.

Seal & Install

In order to keep contamination at bay, the new well must be sealed using a sand and soil mixture that will collapse and settle around the bottom of the new screen pipe. Some water wells require wet concrete to be poured around the new sand to ensure that the pipe is completely sealed. Your contractor will then install the new pump to activate the well and get you on your way.
