Massage can also act as a substitute for unhealthy habits such as smoking or over eating when such behaviors are used as coping devices. For example, if you are trying to quit smoking and are having a particularly bad day at the office, usually a cigarette would help. When you don’t have that coping mechanism, stress can spiral. Try to hold off as much as you can and book an appointment that evening for a massage. Physiologically, the Cedar-Sinai Medical Center found the human touch reduced stress and pain in many patients as well as reduced cortisol and increased white blood cells in those undergoing therapy—a sign of the less stressed subject.
