From back-up cameras to blind spot detection, a lot of advanced safety technology has been added to cars recently. However, the most important safety feature your vehicle has are the brakes. Ensuring they work properly is one of the most important things you can do for your car, and if they begin to make noise, this could be a problem.

There are a few reasons brakes can make noise. If you are driving your car after a rainstorm, or if you have been on vacation and haven't driven in a while, your brakes may make a squealing sound. Don't worry: This is normal. When a bit of surface rust builds up on your rotors, it will take a few minutes to wear off as the brakes are applied. This wearing away of rust is what causes the noise. As rust wears off, the sound will lessen and eventually disappear.

brakesIf the squeal doesn't go away, this could be a problem. All brake pads have a built-in indicator that will make a squealing sound when the pads are low, indicating it is time to replace them. If the sound coming from your car is more of a persistent squeak, like a creaky door, your brakes will need a bit of lubrication.

Brake squeaking may also come from a misalignment. If the brake pad isn't pushing flush against the rotor, this can cause the rotor to warp, and your brakes will make noise. However, if the sound you hear is more like a grinding noise than a squeak or a squeal, this means your brake pads have worn out completely and your car should be taken for repairs right away.
